Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, frequently-occurring, high-disability and high-fatality chronic respiratory disease. It is basically equivalent to the “chronic bronchitis” or “emphysema” used by ordinary people in the past. The World Health Organization estimates that the death rate of COPD ranks 4th or 5th in the world, which is equivalent to the death rate of AIDS. By 2020, it will become the third leading cause of death in the world.

The incidence of COPD in my country in 2001 was 3.17%. An epidemiological survey in Guangdong Province in 2003 showed that the overall prevalence of COPD was 9.40%. The prevalence rate of COPD in the population over 40 in Tianjin is 9.42%, which is close to the recent prevalence rates of 9.1% and 8.5% of the same age group in Europe and Japan. Compared with the survey results in my country in 1992, the prevalence rate of COPD has increased by 3 times. . In 2000 alone, the number of people who died of COPD worldwide reached 2.74 million, and the death rate has increased by 22% in the past 10 years. The incidence of COPD in Shanghai is 3%.

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Health show that chronic respiratory diseases rank first in mortality, among which are the fourth in urban areas, and the number one disease killer in rural areas. Sixty percent of patients with this type of disease suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is a destructive lung disease that gradually weakens the patient’s respiratory function. It is mainly caused by smoking. People over 40 are more likely to get the disease and are not easily detected. , But the morbidity and mortality are high.

At present, there are about 25 million COPD patients in my country, and the number of deaths is 1 million every year, and the number of disabled people is as high as 5-10 million. According to a survey conducted in Guangzhou, the mortality rate of COPD among people over 40 years old is 8%, and that of people over 60 years old is as high as 14%.

The quality of life of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will be greatly reduced. Due to impaired lung function, the patient’s work of breathing increases and energy consumption increases. Even if sitting or lying down and breathing, this kind of patient feels like carrying a burden up the mountain. Therefore, once sick, not only the quality of life of the patient will be reduced, but also the long-term medication and oxygen therapy will cost more, which will bring a heavy burden to the family and society. Therefore, understanding the knowledge of COPD prevention and treatment is of great significance for improving people’s health.
